Hawk Eyes XII – Our Home

Ok I admit it, I did put a toad down the back of her shirt on the way home. She screamed, she jumped, she took her shirt off. But then she got angry, chased me and yelled, “You dog!” She caught me too, tried tickling me, but I’m not ticklish. Ok….well that’s not entirely true.

Anyway, I’m getting distracted, telling you about our journey back home. Besides the rolling around and laughing our heads off, I asked Michelle a lot of questions. One of them was, “Hey Michelle, are all crows filled with evil?” She said, “Not crows Michael, ravens!” “You mean there’s a difference??”

I learned more about nature that day, than I have at any point in my life. She told me, “Ravens are much larger than crows, and many have decided to join the dark forces.” “And crows, there’re too selfish to think of anything but themselves….so they don’t choose sides.” I said, “I had no idea…”

Making the final ascent up to the ridge, Michelle declared, “I need a bath!” So I suggested we head for the stream I was in just yesterday. “Ok, we’ll have to stand guard for each other though, meaning we each take a bath….one at a time.” I started turning red.

As we walked under a group of pine trees, Michelle stopped dead in her tracks. I blurted out, “What’s wrong?” Michelle looked serious, when she turned around, and suggested we have a seat right there. So we sat down, and Michelle said, “Nothing’s wrong Michael…” She was hesitating but with tenderness filling her bulging hawk eyes and her voice, she said, “Michael I think you’re going to love where I live…but you know what?” I waited. “It’s your home too now.”

“There’s no going back now Michael.” When she said that, it was like the floor had dropped out from under me, and to be honest it wasn’t something I had thought of before. I know my face must have been ashen, “You mean no more being a salesman?” She shook her head no.

“You saw how the Dark Forest came after you.” “Because you’re so special, the darkness wants you dead Michael.” “You wouldn’t be safe down there again, and besides we have a job to do.” “That time you called the cops on the thugs breaking into houses, that was only the beginning.”

A few minutes later I was a hawk again, sitting on one of the large branches of an oak tree, guarding Michelle. In particular, there was a waterfall she enjoyed, like a shower. Even though I saw the back of her a few times I was too lost in thought to think about her that way.

I guess, in a way…..I was saying goodbye to the life I once knew. Even though I loved flying, and I was really digging Michelle, I was letting go of what I used to know, of who I used to be…..and……well it was tough.

After grabbing a quick dip myself, Michelle led me to some boulders well hidden in dense forest. She simply touched one of them and the opening was revealed. When I say that, I don’t mean it slid open – I mean one second the rock was there, and the next it wasn’t.

Michelle was beaming, and said, “Welcome home!”

Michelle wants to tell the next few parts, so she will in a couple of days. She’s a better story teller than I am anyway!

Hawk Eyes XI – Flying Solo

I don’t remember much after that, other than it was really weird being able to walk and talk, see, taste, and feel, but I couldn’t see where……where my self was. I could feel Michelle’s hand and she said, “We need to stay connected for this to work….so keep holding on.”

So I did hold on. I vaguely remember Michelle say something important though, “Michael are you listening?” I told her yes, and shook my head, then remembered she couldn’t see that. “Michael…..this is important…..are you listening?” I said it again only louder this time, “Yes!! I’m listening!” “Shhh, not so loud.”

“Michael this is science, not magic…..we don’t practice magic, it is all a matter of physics, and chemistry!” I said nothing because I was falling asleep or maybe passing out.

I woke up the next morning tangled in some kind of web, and couldn’t move! Wait, I was stuck under a pile of blankets…..and well um…..Michelle and I were a mass of interconnected arms and legs. I managed to maneuver her limbs to the side and rolled her over. She was sleeping like a log. Did you know women can snore too?

Anyway, I remembered her saying that using our gifts would wear us out, so I thought she would be out for a while. The sun had been up, and I guessed it was past 9 o’clock. There was no sign of the raven, or of anything evil as I scanned the sky. And I couldn’t sense anything evil on the ground either.

Sooo, I had this wild idea of practicing my flying. For some reason I combed my hair first, looked back at Michelle, and closed my eyes concentrating – and then bam, like that I was a hawk! I jumped up on some rocks, started flapping my wings while running for all I was worth, and it worked!!!

I was flying, first down the mountain, over the river and then back up again. I flew over Michelle several times and decided to land in a pine tree next where she was, but flexed my talons first. Men, I can only describe flying this way, it’s about 1,000 times better than riding a motorcycle!

Sitting high in the pines, I watched her sleeping. Yeah, I admit it, I was starting to fall for her. Somehow, I knew we were made for each other. But I started thinking – do we get married? I mean who would marry a couple like us? Do we just stand on top of a mountain and pledge ourselves to each other, in front of God and everybody?

And it went more than just skin deep, it had to in our case. My thinking was all over the place, when I saw her begin to stir, so I flew down, and around and landed, quickly changing back to a human again. When she was almost awake, I kissed her lightly on the cheek. Yep, that did it, she was wide awake now, and said my name so beautifully I thought I would turn to melting wax, “Michael”, as she beamed from ear to ear.

I sat next to her, and she said, “Hey you were great…..last night!” I stammered, with my heart beating about a hundred miles an hour. “I was???” Then she punched my arm, and laughed, “Had you goin there for a minute – didn’t I?”

I got her back though, on the way back to our home. Yep, “our home”.

In a couple of days, I’ll share more about the two of us.

Hawk Eyes X – The Raven

After Michelle tied the blanket around me, we headed up the trail, to the ridge with large boulders. I couldn’t wait to get to her place and finally crash. It was late afternoon now, and I followed, as she led the way. I asked her a question while we hiked, that I had been thinking about for some time. “So Michelle, do you think God made us this way………and what do you mean by us fighting evil?”

“He absolutely made us this way……every once in a while within our history, the dangers for people are so great, He creates hawk people like us, to help in the fight.” It didn’t take much thinking to realize we were in one of those dark times. She turned to me, and for a second I thought she wanted to kiss me,  but she continued with, “What amazes me is the timing – because it’s all in our genetic code!”

I was about to say something like, “Wow” but I stopped, with my mouth open, realizing or sensing something, close to us. It was in the sky, and it weren’t good!

Michelle sensed it too, and said, “Yeah, I know – it’s at about 2 o’clock and it is evil – but don’t look at it!!” We didn’t see it until much later, but we both knew, or “sensed” it was there.

“Let’s keep walking like we don’t know about it, but we won’t be able to stop at my house though, because he’s doing recon, and they will discover where I live!” Then we jabbered back and forth, “What is it?” “A raven, I know because I can smell them a mile away.” “Should I toss some fire, and burn him out of the sky?” “No! We can’t afford a war right now, and you’re too weak.” “What?”

She turned to me again, looking at me with her huge hawk eyes, but somehow I did see compassion. She said softly, “Using our gifts makes us weak, especially when we first discover them.”

No wonder I was worn out! We kept going even after it was dark though, for about another 3 hours. It was one of the hardest things I had ever done, and my legs felt like rubber. And yet the raven was still following us, sometimes just sitting in a tree, and at other times flying far enough away so we couldn’t reach out and destroy it.

So after a total of 3 ½ hours of walking had gone by, I was about to tell Michelle I had reached my limit, when she said, “Let’s sit down for a while.” So we sat down on a fallen tree. Michelle drew in close to me, and without saying a word, her lips parted and we kissed. It was one of the most amazing kisses I had ever been involved in.

She smiled at me in the dark, and said, “I’ve been thinking about that kiss all day….” Then she whispered in my ear something I cannot repeat here! Anyway, she also said something about it being time to practice one of her gifts, and she told me to get ready to move again.

She said, “One of my gifts is to make things disappear, take my hand…” And within a second, we were invisible.

To be continued in a couple days!

I’m really enjoying this series. Can ya tell?

Hawk Eyes IX – Cool Mountain Streams

Hey, this is Michelle again, and you know what? It’s been really cool getting to know Michael. He amazed me that day, after escaping from the Dark Forest. Up near my place, there are several streams I often bathe in, and that’s where we headed.

I turned my head while he took off what remained of his clothes. They were nothing more now than burnt rags. He let out a soothing “Ah” sound as he went into the water. Ok ladies, you didn’t hear this from me…..but I was tempted, I’m not kidding, but I was at least trying to be good! I sat on some rocks and turned to the side.

I was thinking about how much I was digging him, when he asked me, “I see you covered your eyes again…..did you…..do that for me?” I just nodded yes, and said “Yeah”. He said, “Hey, I’m sorry about my reaction when I saw them…..can we try it again?” He was tugging on my heart strings now. Remember this is when the mess started, between him and I….

Anyway, I turned to him (no I didn’t see anything!) and slowly lifted my eye patch. He didn’t react at all, so I swept back my hair, and there they were – two of the biggest hawk eyes, you would ever want to see! Or not!

I know my eyes are gross, I’m not stupid. But Michael….well he didn’t throw up this time. He did turn away, but said, “I’m getting used to them.”

After he got out of the water, with me turned away, he wrapped himself in the only thing we had – a blanket. As I was helping him tie it, sort of like a toga, I said one of the stupidest things I have ever said. It just wasn’t the right timing, but I blurted out, “Do you think we could be a couple?”

I turned ten shades of red. But he pulled my heartstrings again, by not laughing. Instead he looked at me, with my bare, ugly hawk eyes, looking back at him. He smiled, and said, “Why don’t we get to know each other first.” I just nodded, embarrassed.

Deeply embedded in the rocks, was my place, and no I don’t live in a hawk’s nest! You can’t see it though, until I touch the rock for it to open.

I’ll turn our story over to Michael again, in a couple of days.

Peace out.

Hawk Eyes VIII – Delivered by Fire

Hey, this is Michelle. Yeah, I like the guy. I’m not going to lie, but that’s not what I was thinking about as I was flying above, where he disappeared. I was certain the Dark Forest had lured him in, knowing he was a hawk, and intending to destroy him! They or it, took advantage of him being angry, and not really paying attention to the portal opening and then closing behind him.

Projecting my voice to warn him only worked briefly. Maybe the evil forces of the forest blocked my communicating with him, but I was praying now, hoping he would make it out of there. There was so much he needed to learn, and so far I hadn’t had a chance to explain. Mostly he needed to understand why, and how he was so special.

And then I thought I saw something moving, near the edge, where the trees emptied out into a large meadow. There! It was a wave of air, sort of…….bending…..and moving, and as I swooped down transforming back into a human, I landed about a 100 feet in front of it. For some reason, I could feel heat. I had never been inside of the Dark Forest before, but I knew this was weird.

And then it opened! It was a portal filled with raging fire! I put my arms up to protect my face, because  the heat now, was intense. And then I saw him, running towards me as he pushed through the opening, with his right hand in the air, and a large knife in his left. The strength of his legs pumping at full speed, and his face filled with determination, were amazing. He was magnificent!

He stumbled as soon as he was through, got up and ran towards me. I could see he was burned, hair singed, skin all red, clothing was burning and falling off. “Michael!!” I yelled as the portal closed. I yelled for him to roll on the ground to put out some of the fire still clinging to him.

After we both knew he was ok, he said, “Let’s get outta here!” and I helped him up. But I looked him square in the face and asked, “Where did the fire come from?” He hesitated, but said quietly, “From me, it seems I can throw fire around now……kind of easily too. It comes in streams though…..”

I was shocked. I was so surprised, my legs gave out and I sat down right there. “What?” he said, just staring at me. “It means you’re a lot more special, than I realized.”

A few minutes later I was helping him walk, with one arm under one of his arms. “After dipping you in a cold stream I’m taking you back to my place.” I said. He asked, “You live up here?” I just shook my head yes.

Along the way I shared briefly why we were made hawks, and that we were up against some pretty tough dark forces. He just listened.

I will tell you he really likes my place, high up in the mountains. That’s always helpful, wink, wink!

Peace out.

I’ll share more of our story in a couple of days,

Hawk Eyes VII – The Dark Forest

Now, I want you to understand that I know these trails, these mountains, like the back of my hand. No, I’m serious, I’ve been walking them for years every weekend. But for some reason I didn’t really notice when it all began to change. I had too much on my mind I guess.

And at the top of my unresolved list, was that I would never have a romantic relationship again. Ok, in guy terms, I would never make love again. With my hawk eyes, normal women would freak out, and the only woman like me was Michelle. Besides having worse looking, and uglier hawk eyes than me, she was so weird!

I was fuming, but I stopped dead in my tracks when I came up on a stream that had never been there before. And the plants, the underbrush was all different. I had never seen some of them before! I kept going though, wanting a place so remote no one would ever find me. But then I noticed the sky.

It was not just grey now, but there was no sun either, I mean anywhere. To be honest there were no clouds either! I also began hearing the trees making a weird noise. I thought, “What the heck is this place!” It was about this time I heard Michelle calling me again.

“Michael!” I turned in every direction but did not see her. “Where are you?” I asked. “Michael, you need to get out of there, you’ve gone too far!” Now when she said that, I wasn’t sure what she meant, but I figured she just wanted me to be with her, going through “transformations” or something else weird.

But she got my attention when she said, “Michael I’m projecting my voice because you’ve gone into the Dark Forest……it’s like…..well…. another dimension, sort of. And Michael they hate hawk people……like you and I!!” It was then that the trees began moving towards me, and vines and underbrush, started going for my legs!

This wasn’t adding up, but I ain’t stupid. “Michelle everything is moving in against me – how do I get out of here?!” She told me to look at the trail that I had been on, “And Michael follow that trail for about 30 minutes – if you need to – run!”

I pulled my large hunting knife off my belt, and high-tailed it back the way I came, at least the best that I could. It was only noon, but this forest was growing darker, and a deep fog was moving in. “Oh man!!” I took off, but a vine got my right ankle and twisted itself around it, so down I went. My knife was the only thing that saved me as I slashed it off.

I heard Michelle again, “Michael, I will explain everything once you get back here…..but pleeeeease get back here!!” I wanted to yell, “I’m trying!!” but there was no time. As I took off running again a tree branch slapped me in the face. It hurt like hell, and now I was getting angry, but I kept running.

I knew I wasn’t going to make it but I had a thought. Isn’t wasn’t Michelle’s voice, I know it was my own brain saying the word “fire”. Somehow, I knew fire would bring me to safety, and deep within I knew I could throw my hand up, and burn this place to the ground.

I felt stupid, but I held up my right hand as I was running (with my knife in my left hand) as the forest continued to move in I yelled, “Fire!!!!”. And sure enough, fire streamed behind me, and above my head. I heard screams of pain behind me, but I kept running. There was no time for freaking out.

To be continued in a few days, and the next segment will be told by Michelle!

Hawk Eyes VI

I must have passed out, because I don’t remember anything before the two of us hit the ground, with a huge thud. The strange thing was, we were right back where we started. Was it a vision, or had we really turned into hawks?

To be honest, I couldn’t think straight, I was in too much pain, and as I rolled around moaning, unable to get up, I was vaguely aware of Michelle yelling at me. “What the hell is wrong with you?!!” “You almost killed both of us?!!” But her voice seemed distant and I had a ringing in my ears, so I ignored her.

As I began sitting up, she was still yelling, “You never give up, in the middle of a transformation!!” I shook my head trying to think, “A transfor…..what?” It was then that Michelle stood over me, with both hands on her hips. She said, “Trans-for-ma-tion.”, as if I needed to hear it slower. And then she did something I would never forget, and to be honest I wish she hadn’t done it.

She looked down at me and flipped up her eye patch. And when she saw my look of shock, and my jaw drop, she swept her almost blonde hair back, from the other eye. I couldn’t help myself, I turned to my right (away from her) and vomited like a big dog.

She had stared hard at me with the most hideous eyes I had ever seen. And if you haven’t guessed it by now, she had two of the strangest, and ugliest hawk eyes. She said nothing as I emptied my gut of every fragment of anything. Not looking at her, I eventually made it to my feet and covered my vomit with dirt.

What I did not know at the time, was that my reaction to her eyes, really hurt her feelings deeply. Tears were streaming down her face. But I didn’t know that, because I wasn’t looking at her any more. I looked around at the ground and started gathering my backpack, and the rest of my belongings. I also grabbed one of the blankets, and headed back down the trail. “Where are you going?” she asked. I mumbled, “I’m outta here.”

The only thing I wanted, was to be away from this whole mess, hawk eyes, wings, transformation – I was done! And that included Michelle. Stumbling, hurting, sick, and angry, I headed back towards the car, but at the last second, I decided on a side trail. Actually, it wasn’t a trail at all, but it was a path the deer often travelled.

I walked for hours, vaguely aware of a shadow of wings, following me. When I saw the shadow covering me, I knew instantly it was her. And it was if I could hear in my mind, Michelle’s voice calling me, “Michael wait!”

I didn’t care anymore, and I just wanted to be in the deepest, darkest woods I could find. I needed to think, and sort this all out.

To be continued tomorrow!
